Cotton production across the country witnessed a positive quality trajectory in the last year 4 years following the accelerated increase in yield as confirmed by the President “National Cotton Association of Nigeria ” (NACOTAN). OPERATIONS.
Paper industry rates as one of the critical sectors essential to societal growth and sustainable development, paper is indispensable to civilization, in this wise, paper requirements is fundermental issue of national significance.
Nigeria my country once made a bold effort to establish a Nigeria Paper Mill Ltd in Jebba, Kwara State. It was the first integrated pulp and paper mills in West Africa incorporated in 1963, commissioned in 1969 and managed by Messr Birla Brothers of India. It had a capacity of of 40tons per day (12,000tpa of Kraft and Duplicating papers) .
The project fulfills a wide range of laudable national objectives including the following :
FUNCTIONALITIES
-Training, Research and Development in paper technology.
-Exploitation of indigenous resources of tropical hardwood for paper manufacturing.
-Over 50% import substitution of industrial grade of the country’s paper requirements.
-Provision of basic materials for the development of ancillary industries based on paper products.
– Huge savings in foreign currency……
The Mill’s end products and their uses include and not limited to.
✔Kraft Paper – for packaging, wrapping, manufacture of envelopes gum tapes and foam.
✔Zack Kraft – for multi wall paper sacks for cement, animal feeds, fertilizer etc.
✔Kraft Liner Board – for manufacture of corrugated cartons, core board for toilet rolls, textiles etc.
✔Grey Chip board
✔Fluting Media for corrugated boxes to absorb impact and protect fragile items.
✔White Lined Chip Board – for light packaging.
✔Corrugated Cartons – for packaging of detergents, sugar, cigarettes and beer etc.
There are also converting plants which occasionally produces Duplicating papers, exercise books, fools cap sheets and other stationaries.
PERFORMANCE
-The largest integrated Pulp and Paper mill in West Africa with production capacity of 65,000tonnes per annum or 200tonnes per day of pulp and paper with potential to expand production capacity to 500tonnesper day.
-The first mill in Nigeria to undertake fully mechanised forestry operations On a large scale.
-The first of the 3 paper mills in the country to start commercial production under the auspices of the Federal government.
-The first mill using indegenious heterogeneous tropical hardwood for the manufacture of pulp and paper.
-It had the only technical training institute in Paper technology.
-Won the prestigious 7th International Africa Award for quality product and commercial achievement.
