Food Security
THE IMPENDING GLOBAL FAMINE FROM THE PERSPECTIVES OF THE WORLD INSTITUTIONAL LEADERS.
……@Wufas agronet, We don’t know more than Food. — ( Earner “FAO TOP FAN ” Badge )
The leaders of the various world institutions having bearing with Food security such as The President, World Bank Group – David Malpass , The MD IMF — Kristalina Georgieva , The Executive Director World Food Programme (WFP) — David Beasley and Director General WTO — Ngozi Okonjo – Iwela . Recentlyi in April 2022 deliberated on the effect of world food sustainablility in the face of the current instability caused by the conflict between Russia and Ukraine .
Million tons of foods supply from Ukraine were blocked by Russia at the black Sea. While supply from Russia are being sanctioned .
Russia is the main hub of fertilisers’ main ingredients Nitrogen, Posphate and Potassium. — currently fertilisers prices have gone up , its so expensive to grow crop with fertilisers .
The world Food supply and sustainability is being threatened by multiple factors such as “political sclerosis” of Ukraine / Russia war, the COVID- 19 Pandemic, Intense Climate change and terrorism in parts of the world Nigeria in particular , causing increased fragility and the conflict posing persistent harm to people world over .
All these have direct negative consequences on the current planting season. (2022). Which started in April -July ( food grains have a 90days circle of germination to harvest) .
EFFECT OF THE CRISIS
● In Nigeria , Food supply was affected by the inability of farming activities to yield maximally due to insecurity posed by the bandits and terrorists causing supply shortages and sharply higher prices on the locality grown cereals, tubers , the tree crops and others thereby increasing pressure on households pushing many to poverty.
● In the global commodity market the barrel of crude oil sell for about $130 , the implications of this in Nigeria that import her refined fossil fuels is the outrageous increase in price of PMS from 130Naira to 650 Naira per litre..
● Causing Social tension in the fragile economy of the poor countries that abound in Africa who are mostly import dependent on food items such as Cereal grains Wheat, Barely malt. Legumes like Soybean , oils , fish, Poultry products etc
THE LEADERS RESOLUTION.
The leaders resolved that :
— The international communities should support vulnerable countries through coordinated actions such as
● Provision of emergency food supply, Financial support, increase agricultural production and processing.
● Balance of trade pressure be impacted on to keep trade flow open.
● Comparative advantages of respective institutions to address agricultural production and processing.
● No imposition of restrictive ban on Food or fertiliser that may further exacerbate the suffering of most vulnerable people and humanitarian Food purchases by UN’s WFP.
CONCLUSION
■Various Heads of world institutions that has direct or inditect bearing on Food security should as a matter of urgency institute remidial actions to mitigate full blown famine in the world especially the most vulnerable poor countries who are slipping into extreme poverty per second of time. Currently, Nigeria is the capital of extreme poverty in the world.
■ Agroprocessing ( On – the – farm ) is vital in mitigating large scale famine in the world .
In the world, about 30% of Agricultural production is wasted annually while in Africa context it’s about 40%.due to Lack of infrastructural development such as :
— Good road network to the farming communities in the rural areas, lack of electricity gor col chaon maintenance etc.
— Lack of adequate storage facilities such as silos.
— Lack of On -the – farm processing.
— Lack of adequate knowledge in Food processing technology etc.

TYPES OF COLD CHAINS
-SHOCK FREEZERS
Shock Freezers are professional equipment that controls temperature necessary for keeping products fresh for a long time.
While preserving the products the equipment makes to keep undamaged nutritional value of the products after being defrosted. The equipment is made to consists of Double Stage Semi Hermatic compressors. The Shock freezers system allows to lower the temperature very rapidly up to -180°C degrees. Freezing is provided by air coolers of it by blowing over fronted surface of the wagon. This enables to freeze down quickly in cold air flow. The room air should not exceed 35°/-40.°C. Besides, it’s proven to be a low-waste and environment friendly system.
COLDSTORAGE
This system is manufactured and installed with the entire components like it is ready to use. It could be of mobile device.
This system can be disassembled so it can be moved to other places.
Cold storage consist of the following levels and types of preserving:
-Cold-rooms 🙁 +16° / +5°C)
-Cold storage Rooms (+5°/-5°C)
-Freezing Rooms : (-18°/-23°C)
-Shock freezer :(-35°/-40°C) .
DEEPFREEZE ROOMS.
These are for preserving products such as meat, poultry etc. For a long time. They are preserved under temperatures not exceeding – 18°/-23°C. In order to isolate these rooms 150mm width sandwich panels are used.
COLD ROOMS
Cold rooms are used to keep baked goods, chocolates etc.
