WATER
Portable /Pipe borne water in Nigeria’s Urban metropolis reduced drastically from about 30% in 1990 to about 7% in 2015. Provision of portable water supply to inhabitants in Nigeria is a complimentary shared constitutional responsibility of the three tiers of government .While the Federal Ministry of water resources is responsible for policy advice information , Data collection, monitoring / reporting and making special intervention.
The state Government through the MDAs are directly responsible for water to the Urban, small towns and rural areas .
The Local Government are responsible for rural communities in their areas of jurisdiction.
However, in Nigeria the norm for water provision rest squarely on developers to include bore holes for water needs with no provision for Water treatment equipment. Making the water not conforming to WHO standard in the Physical,Chemical, Heavy metal and Microbiological requirements.
■ YAM TUBERS
Nigeria is the global highest producer of yams with 67% ( using cutlass and hoes ). despite being the leading producer of fresh yam , its unfortunate that Nigeria’s yam is nowhere in export market even its so expensive to buy a tuber of yam here in Nigeria. . While Ghana with 10% production capacity has its earnings from yam export from $18.4million in 2015 to $39.7million in 2021. Recently , China has intensified efforts in yam production just like they are doing in garri production. Nigeria may soon be China’s target market for yam.
Concerted efforts must be taken to address the anomalies.

■ Cocoa production in Nigeria fell to 350000mt , Ivory Coast 800000mt and Ghana 1.7mmt.Nigeria used to be the leading producer years back

■ Rice consumption demand is about 7.1mmt while only 56% is locally produced. Making Nigeria about the 16th largest producer globally.
■ Onion demand in Nigeria is about 2.5mmt while 1.4mmt is produced.
■ Maize production is 10.5mmt while demand is about 15mmt.
■ Cashew – Nigeria is about the global 4th largest supplier with about 160,000mt.
■ Hibiscus, a heavily pigmented flower , valuable for confectionery needs is a major income earner with about $3bn worth. Mexico import was worth about $600million in 2017 until infestation halt further transaction.
■ Tomatoes (CBN data 2014) 1.8mmt while only 900000mt supplied and 900000mt lost to infrastructural deficit and derth of processing wherewithal.
■ Fish — 900,000mt imported annually with annual demand of 1.5mmt. There are about 264 dams in Nigeria, most designed for multiple useages including fishing , with extensive coastal brackish waters and many rivers but all these are grossly under utilised.
■ Fruits and Vegetables are abundantly produced in Nigeria with unquantifiable looses due to lack of poor post harvest handling such :Poor Storage facilities , poor road network in rural areas, lack of on- the farm processing , Cold chain maintenance etc.
■Palm oil – Nigeria was the largest producer in the 1960s , history had it that Malaysia cut her teeth in oil palm production business from Nigeria but currently , Indonesia and Malaysia combine to export 90% of the global supply. In 2017, Netherlands became 3rd highest producer while Quatar came 4th with Nigeria coming a distance 7th.
■ Grains – International Finance Corporation and other institutions posited that Sub Sahara Africa looses an average of about 13.5% at post harvest phase equivalent of $4bn annually.
