FAMINE EARLY WARNING SYSTEM IN NIGERIA AND TIME TO ASSIDUOUSLY WORK ON AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION AND PROCESSING — (on-the fam).

Published

…..@ WUFAS AGRONET, We don’t know more than Food.

The National Bureau For Statistics claimed that Durum Wheat importation surged to all time high of 71% at 1.29 trillion Naira in 2021. This is evidently manifested in the eating habits of Nigerians especially in the Urban and Suburban metropolis. Most families now depend on Wheat derivatives three times ( 3× )daily in Bread, Noddles, Pastries, Semolina etc. (Durum wheat is rich in plant protein of “Glutten” responsible for dough formation in wheat flour. ) However, this can be addressed by using increased amount of Cassava flour with durum wheat as an adjunct of about 60 : 40% respectively. ( Remember President Goodluck Jonathan’s Cassava bread ?)
This will ultimately increase the use of improved seedlings in Cassava and Potatoes production.
Farming production — ( RainFed crops in cereals , legumes, fruits and vegetables have started ) will last for about 90days from April-July. While with irrigation if properly managed ( non saline ) could ensure all year round production. Nigeria has a landmass of about 93msqkm while about 71% are fertile arable land and only 38% are cultivated.
The entire world is anticipating looming famine due to the on going war between Russia and Ukraine which has occasioned sanctions against Russia.
The two countries produce about 30% of world food production in cereals and legumes eg Wheat and Soybeans.Russia is the global base for Nitrogen Phosphate and Potassium ingredients for fertiliser, fertiliser prices had skyrocketed due to sanctions placed on Russia.
Brazil and Argentina who are into export production of wheat and soybeans were affected by the effect of drought in 2020/21 farming season.
Farmers in Europe and Asia are applying various technologies to overcome shortages.
while Africa who are mostly import dependent nations in -Food items- shall be adversely affected due to the ‘alltime’ seemingly unpreparedness (lackadaisical ) in issues concerning them most .
Already in Europe Spain in particular, citizens there are protesting high inflation in cost of food items.
To assuage the looming shortages in food supply , the time is now to put into use the various techniques acquired in agricultural production such as in superb agronomy, mechanisanisation, irrigation, fertiliser application and various researches into improve seedlings all at the expense of “Food processing ” to use .

WHEAT
Russia in 2019 projected plan for 200mmt of wheat while Brazil cleared up about 40 Sq km land in the amazon region for Soybeans production . Nigeria too should go through the bend to encourage the eight (8) Northern states of wheat farming : Bauchi, Zamfara, Nassarawa, Kano , Jigawa , Kaduna, Yola and Kebbi They produce about 30% of total wheat demand. Nigeria import about 4.7mmt of wheat annually.
■– The National AGRICULTURAL LAND DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY – NALDA. Tasked with development through land clearing, provision of subsidised input to farmers and farmers cooperative as well as encouraging economic size farm holdings. Should ensure proper faming.

■ FOOD PROCESSING
The teeming youthful population, should be trained in the fundamentals — Ethics of Food Processing technology such as Water treatment and packaging, Preservation, of several classes of foods, Packaging, Quality control concept, Food mgt system etc. This will enhance Value Chain Development of On -The – Farm food processing of items such as Fruits and vegetables, Beverages (alcoholic and non- alcoholic ) etc. In Global Competitiveness and International National Best Practices..

■– PANACEA
With the above prognostic findings, effort should be geared towards increasing agricultural productivity by :
● Adequately funding agricultural projects through the minimum budgetary allocation of 10%.
● Best agronomy practices and improved seedlings from the Apex Research Institutions such as IITA whose efforts in improved seedlings is felt in Africa.
● The Nitrogen fertiliser of Dangote should give us enough Urea fertiliser (ammonium compound)
● There must be conserted effort to synergies efforts by Government, Scientists and other stakeholders in agricultural value chain
● Insecurity — The efforts of the various security forces should be appreciated for giving their all for peaceful co- existence. It’s hoped that very soon victory shall be assured.

■ REQUIREMENTS FOR Crop MONITORING AND EARLY WARNING SYSTEM PROGRAMME.
●The Central Planning Department of the Agricultural Department must have field monitoring unitsin every state and the Federal Capital territory..

● Efficient, focused food security monitoring , data collection assessment and early warning analysis.
● Effective communication of early warning analysis to partner and decision-makers through contributions to high quality reportage and participation in briefings formal and informal meetings
● Close collaboration with key network partners, including those with a more diffuse field presence such as host -government counterparts, UN agencies (eg WFP, FAO, and UNICEF ) and regional and local non- government organisations amongst others.
● Network development through capacity strengthen with respect to partners agencies tools and analysis.

TYPES OF COLD CHAINS

-SHOCK FREEZERS
Shock Freezers are professional equipment that controls temperature necessary for keeping products fresh for a long time.
While preserving the products the equipment makes to keep undamaged nutritional value of the products after being defrosted. The equipment is made to consists of Double Stage Semi Hermatic compressors. The Shock freezers system allows to lower the temperature very rapidly up to -180°C degrees. Freezing is provided by air coolers of it by blowing over fronted surface of the wagon. This enables to freeze down quickly in cold air flow. The room air should not exceed 35°/-40.°C. Besides, it’s proven to be a low-waste and environment friendly system.

COLDSTORAGE
This system is manufactured and installed with the entire components like it is ready to use. It could be of mobile device.
This system can be disassembled so it can be moved to other places.
Cold storage consist of the following levels and types of preserving:
-Cold-rooms 🙁 +16° / +5°C)
-Cold storage Rooms (+5°/-5°C)
-Freezing Rooms : (-18°/-23°C)
-Shock freezer :(-35°/-40°C) .

DEEPFREEZE ROOMS.
These are for preserving products such as meat, poultry etc. For a long time. They are preserved under temperatures not exceeding – 18°/-23°C. In order to isolate these rooms 150mm width sandwich panels are used.

COLD ROOMS
Cold rooms are used to keep baked goods, chocolates etc.
The cold rooms prevent bacteria from growing. Low ventilation allows workers to work without endangering their health which is very important aspect too.
