EXCESSIVE FLOODWATERS
Nigeria has become a perennial victim of flooding with attendance acute food shortages, this should be a source of concern for both the government and the people .
FLOODING is caused by the inadequate capacity within the bank of the rivers to contain the high flow rate from the upper catchment due to heavy downpour. It is accentuated by erosion and silting of the river beds with a reduction in the carrying capacity of the river channels leading to changes in the river courses and obstruction to flow ; synchronisation of floods in the main and tributaries of Benue river retardation due to tidal effects , encroachment of the flood plains , haphazard and unplanned growth of urban areas.
That mother nature has brought untold hardship to torment the inhabitants of the land making nonsense of all the ingenuity put into developmental planning , exposing our collective incompetence and unpreparedness to natural disaster management, is a sham of high magnitude.
The recent flood disaster is blamed on release of excess water from one Lagdo Dam in the neighbouring Cameroon and the unusual rainfall. Investigations revealed that Cameron and Nigeria were supposed to build two Dams on river Benue , the Nigeria’s end was to be one called Dasin Hausa Dam in Adamawa which was supposed to be two and half the size of Lagdo Dam to contain excess spillovers for electricity and irrigation but couldn’t be, hence, resulting in excessive uncontrolled large body of waters destroying on it’s trail in Nigeria many farmlands , houses especially those along the flood plains and killing large number of people by the ravaging flood.
The horrendous occurrence will promptly elicit crocodile tears by the various concerned authorities in the government circles who will be threatening fire and brimstones against perpetrators of actions that exacerbated the damage but sadly enough, after the waters recede to make way for normal life again , it becomes business as usual awaiting the next year’s occurrence.

GOVERNMENT ROLE
The government at the centre created bodies that can contain occurrence of this magnitude in the name of ’emergency relief ‘ which have in place agencies that can handle the situation with adequate provisions – It’s pertinent that those saddled with the responsibility take their assignments with all seriousness .

NMET
Floods don’t just happen there is usually sufficient and advance warning of what is coming from NMET the (Nigeria Meteorological Agency) concerned with weather forecast. Usually these warnings are often ignored until disaster hit again.
After the hue and cries of the concern authorities , officials would be seen wading through the waters on roads (under Television glare ) becoming champions in the horrendous situations but everything is forgotten and back to usual / normal again when the tide eased.
Time was when Abuja masterplan was distorted but for the timely intervention of the government in power then who took the bull by the horn to restore the master plan today the city is better for it. Other metropolis should follow suit..

IMMINENT FOOD SHORTAGE
With the attendance of global food shortage occasioned by the escalation of Russia/Ukraine hostilities which had risen wheat prices up by almost 40% coupled with excessive flooding that has devastated most farmlands , notably, most swamp rice farms along the flood plains of rivers Niger and Benue were submerged and destroyed while entrepreneurial cat fish farmers lost unquantifiable amount in the floods, the pressure on other imported food commodities especially on wheat , rice and maize will reverbrate on other local substitutes creating a knock – on effect on prices owning to a high level of cross elasticity . A surge is therefore expected in the prices of yam, bean,rice, cassava, soghium etc. While smuggling across the border could be exacerbated.. Storage of harvested food grain is very low between 5– 7% making availability very unreliable, whatever effort that could be speared in storing up food commodities would suffice .

TYPES OF COLD CHAINS

-SHOCK FREEZERS
Shock Freezers are professional equipment that controls temperature necessary for keeping products fresh for a long time.
While preserving the products the equipment makes to keep undamaged nutritional value of the products after being defrosted. The equipment is made to consists of Double Stage Semi Hermatic compressors. The Shock freezers system allows to lower the temperature very rapidly up to -180°C degrees. Freezing is provided by air coolers of it by blowing over fronted surface of the wagon. This enables to freeze down quickly in cold air flow. The room air should not exceed 35°/-40.°C. Besides, it’s proven to be a low-waste and environment friendly system.

COLDSTORAGE
This system is manufactured and installed with the entire components like it is ready to use. It could be of mobile device.
This system can be disassembled so it can be moved to other places.
Cold storage consist of the following levels and types of preserving:
-Cold-rooms 🙁 +16° / +5°C)
-Cold storage Rooms (+5°/-5°C)
-Freezing Rooms : (-18°/-23°C)
-Shock freezer :(-35°/-40°C) .

DEEPFREEZE ROOMS.
These are for preserving products such as meat, poultry etc. For a long time. They are preserved under temperatures not exceeding – 18°/-23°C. In order to isolate these rooms 150mm width sandwich panels are used.

COLD ROOMS
Cold rooms are used to keep baked goods, chocolates etc.
The cold rooms prevent bacteria from growing. Low ventilation allows workers to work without endangering their health which is very important aspect too.
