MAIZE – A cereal grain belong to the plant family of grasses stork known as GRAMINACEAE . It is widely grown in different parts of the world especially in Africa and Nigeria in particular .
In Nigeria, it can grow in all the ecological zones of the country , it is a rainfed crop, the planting season starts mid March – April in the south and May – June in the North. It matures within 3-4 months of planting.
USES
Cornstarch is being increasingly utilised in Food & Beverage industries globally as Animal feeds, Paper board, Corn starch is rapidly being used as culinary additives in various applications including thickening sauce, mold gums, binding baking components and modified starches for drymix as in Custard powder while other functional superiority has significantly broadened their use spectrum across various applications.
Sweetener type segment – due to increase awareness about Sweeteners in most part of the world. Most manufacturers employ sweetener generated from corn starch for its Cost -effectiveness . The United States is world’s most significant producers of Corn and it’s derivatives. Increase in the consumption of convenience foods and RTE snacks due to rising demand for bakery and snack food.
Maize is multiplely used as main ingredient about 60% for Poultry feeds, as key imput 25% for Food ( Flour miller ) and Beverages manufacturing ,Corn flour is commonly used as Food thickener and the remaining for household consumption.
Maize is the most important Food in Sub Sahara Africa – FAO.
There has been decline in Maize output recently due to devastating effect of climate change coupled with the intensifying insecurity challenges that have forced many farmers out of job on the farm, explosion in population growth . as well as COVID 19 Pandemic obstructing the supply chain.
YEILD
Yeild per hectare is very low in Africa while production could not match the population growth rate .Nigeria is number 1 grower in Africa and number 13th in the world with a production of about 10.5 MMT per annum while demand is about 15MMT leaving a supply gap of about .4.5mmt . ( Fed Ministry of Agriculture ) . The Yeild per hectare in Nigeria is about 1.6 Mt per hectare. while Kenya and Ghana have a Yeild of 2mt / hectare and South Africa have 6mt/hectare. — Nigeria has larger landmass than other producing Nations .
In 2017, the value of Nigeria Maize was put at $6 billion or 25trillion Naira. (IITA )
Small holder farmers have limited access to improved seedlings, lack of technology and poor farming Practices were the major causes of the low Yeild. Leading to high production cost.
Importation of Maize is hampered by very stringent foreign exchange sourcing coupled with the attendant ban placed on importation. However, Central Bank of Nigeria do interven to provide socour during hyper scarcity for industrial useage especially for Poultry feeds.
IMPROVED SEEDLINGS
● High tolerance to drought and Maize ( Methal Necrosis diseases – MLND ).
●Adaptability in various ecological zones.
●High yield and large grain size.
●Low soil N2 (nitrogen) tolerant
●Resistant to root and stalk loading.
● DK 777 yield 40-44 bags / htre.
À● DK 777 maize.
CURBING DECLINE IN OUTPUT
There are veritable government apparatus to engage in massive commercial farming in Mechanisation — .NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL LAND DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY. The Authority is primarily charged with the task of land development through land clearing, provision of subsidised inputs to farmers and Cooperatives as well as encouraging large scale farming. This Authority can work in synergy with the River Basin Development Authorities for irrigation purposes. Towards this, Nigeria is endowed with large land surface area in the Northern Sahel, Sudan and Guinea Savanna areas such as Niger state 76,363sqkm, Borno 70,898 sqkm, Zamfara 39,762sqkm, Taraba 54,473sqkm, Kwara 36,825sqkm, Kebbi 36,825sqkm, and Kogi 29,833 sqkm for Mechanised farming.
INSECURITY
The various aggrieved groups in Insurgency, Banditry, kidnapping and other high end crimes should please heed the call of the President to join in moving Nigeria forward where there will be enough for everyone.
CONCLUSION
WITH PEACEFUL COEXISTENCE NIGERIA CAN LEAD THE WORLD IN AGROPENUERAIL PRODUCTION.
GOD BLESS NIGERIA

The equipment is made to consists of Double Stage Semi Hermatic compressors. The Shock freezers system allows to lower the temperature very rapidly up to -180°C degrees. Freezing is provided by air coolers of it by blowing over fronted surface of the wagon. This enables to freeze down quickly in cold air flow. The room air should not exceed 35°/-40.°C. Besides, it’s proven to be a low-waste and environment friendly system.
COLDSTORAGE
This system is manufactured and installed with the entire components like it is ready to use. It could be of mobile device.
This system can be disassembled so it can be moved to other places.
Cold storage consist of the following levels and types of preserving:
-Cold-rooms 🙁 +16° / +5°C)
-Cold storage Rooms (+5°/-5°C)
-Freezing Rooms : (-18°/-23°C)
-Shock freezer :(-35°/-40°C) .
DEEPFREEZE ROOMS.
These are for preserving products such as meat, poultry etc. For a long time. They are preserved under temperatures not exceeding – 18°/-23°C. In order to isolate these rooms 150mm width sandwich panels are used.
COLD ROOMS
Cold rooms are used to keep baked goods, chocolates etc.
The cold rooms prevent bacteria from growing. Low ventilation allows workers to work without endangering their health which is very important aspect too.
