NIGERIA IN SEARCH OF FOOD SECURITY

■ The FAO standard for an agricultural mechanised Nation is the deployment of 300 tractors per 1000km of farmland but Nigeria’s deployment is less than 50 tractors.
■ Landmass- Nigeria is endowed with about 96.3million hectares ( 923,768sqkm) of fertile arable land of which 71% is cultivateable and 38% cultivated.
■ It’s interesting to note that the entire landmass of the five states of SW of Nigeria 76,320sqkm is about the size of Niger state 76,363sqkm. While the five states of SE of Nigeria 29,525sqkm is just the size of Kogi state 29,838sqkm.
■ Food self sufficiency in Nigeria before invasion by terrorists, bandits, kidnappers and other highend crimes was 22% .

FOOD SELF SUFFICIENCY
The administration of President Tinubu places much emphasis on Food security placing it on National Emergency. Towards this , the Vice President had been shuttling around the globe soliciting for assistance on Food security.
Nigeria’s Food self sufficiency before invasion by terrorists , bandits, kidnappers and other highend crimes was 22% of constence farming. Farming activities had suffered a decline ever since.

ADEQUATE SECURITY
Agricultural production and progression had suffered setback over the past years as a result of terrorism , banditry and kidnappers , however, the various law enforcement agencies are on top of the game.

LANDMASS.
Nigeria is endowed with abundant landmass 923,768 sqkm of fertile arable land, with good soil and climate of which 71% are cultivateable with only 38% cultivated. one hectare of land can yield 8-11 tons of farm produce of Food and Cash crops, Fruits and vegetables, Integrated farming in poultry and animal husbandry etc.
Some states are endowed with massive portion of the landmass eg Niger state with 76,363sqkm , Bornu has 70,898sqkm, Taraba has 54,473sqkm, Bauchi has 45,838sqkm , Kogi has 29,838sqkm. Compared with Lagos with 3,345sqkm.The entire five states of the SW of Nigeria has 76,320sqkm (Niger state is 76,363sqkm ) while the five SE states has 29,525sqkm just the size of Kogi state.
● The northern axis of the country is apt for agricultural mechanisation.

FACTORS INVOLVED IN FOOD SECURITY
However, various indices for a secured food sufficiency entails the triple “A”s.Which are Availability, Acceptability and Affordability.

AVAILABILITY
Is a function of large Landmass that can accommodate agricultural Mechanisation for Massive, Aggressive, Commercial and Organic farming production. Mechanisation as stipulated by FAO is an average deployment of 300 tractors for every 1000km of farmland but in Nigeria less than 50 tractors are deployed.
It’s imperative to state that various ecological zones with massive land mass should deploy such for crops of comparative advantage with mechanisation , eg Niger state situated in the Guinea Savannah ecological zone ( woodland with longrass ) is suitable for maize. Maize production had always been in the deficit , about 10.5mton per annum isn’t sufficient as the demand is about 15mt. 60% of the annual production is consumed by the poultry industry for raising chicken for animal protein needed . Other crops of comparative advantageous in the zone are rice, pluses -Soya beans etc.

ACCEPTABILITY
This ensures that the post harvest produce is processed to meet international best practices/standards and compete globally for acceptability.
■ The above is made possible by following the General Manufacturing Practices which entails . Water treatment and purification, Food preservation, Food packaging, Food Management system, Food Quality Control and Assurance, Food Fortifications etc.
■ Food processing — Different classes of food have their specifity , hence, the need to ensure adequate adherence to the “FLOW CHART” recommendations.

■ ON -THE FARM PROCESSING.Value addition to post harvest produce on the farm.
— This involves installation of processing equipment at the farm site such as : Machinery, Storage silos , Good roadworks, Electricity etc Jobs are hereby provided for the rural populace.

TYPES OF COLD CHAINS

-SHOCK FREEZERS
Shock Freezers are professional equipment that controls temperature necessary for keeping products fresh for a long time.
While preserving the products the equipment makes to keep undamaged nutritional value of the products after being defrosted. The equipment is made to consists of Double Stage Semi Hermatic compressors. The Shock freezers system allows to lower the temperature very rapidly up to -180°C degrees. Freezing is provided by air coolers of it by blowing over fronted surface of the wagon. This enables to freeze down quickly in cold air flow. The room air should not exceed 35°/-40.°C. Besides, it’s proven to be a low-waste and environment friendly system.

COLDSTORAGE
This system is manufactured and installed with the entire components like it is ready to use. It could be of mobile device.
This system can be disassembled so it can be moved to other places.
Cold storage consist of the following levels and types of preserving:
-Cold-rooms 🙁 +16° / +5°C)
-Cold storage Rooms (+5°/-5°C)
-Freezing Rooms : (-18°/-23°C)
-Shock freezer :(-35°/-40°C) .

DEEPFREEZE ROOMS.
These are for preserving products such as meat, poultry etc. For a long time. They are preserved under temperatures not exceeding – 18°/-23°C. In order to isolate these rooms 150mm width sandwich panels are used.

COLD ROOMS
Cold rooms are used to keep baked goods, chocolates etc.
The cold rooms prevent bacteria from growing. Low ventilation allows workers to work without endangering their health which is very important aspect too.
