Lagos in 1960 was known as Lagos Colony (Lagos island – Isale Eko & VI ) became the Federal Capital at independence , however, Lagos State was created in 1967 by General Yakubu Gowon’s Administration madeup of 5 districts of then Western Region ie Ikeja , Badagary, Ikorodu, Lagos island and Epe – (IBILE) — with landmass of 2797.72 sq Km and water area of 779.56sq km total area 3,577.28sq km. With population of 17million in 2006 census and given a growth rate of about 6.8% in urban metropolis in 2022 it is presently estimated in excess of over 22 million.
In 2015, with GDP of $136b.was 4th in Africa.
Lagos is the smallest, richest , oldest , untouched or divided state since creation (1967) in Nigeria..
As Nigeria’s economic hub, Lagos has been named the fourth wealthiest City on the African continent with a total “Private Wealth ” of $97billion . As contained in the Africa Wealth Report 2022 released by Henley & Partners in partnership with the new world wealth.
Recently, “The Cable Index” ranked Lagos as the leading IGR generator in Nigeria states with 753.3 bn Naira followed by FCT 131.9bn Naira and Rivers State with 123.3bn in 2021.

IGR (2022 )
The 36 states and the FCT generated a total of N1,925,612,626,650.76 tri. as IGR in 2022.this grew by 1.57% compared to N1,895,786,762,263.80 in 2021.NBS recalled that like 2021, the leading states in total IGR during the year were Lagos, Rivers and the FCT with N 651,145,633,085.30, N172,823,232,535.44 and N 124, 366,774,519.25 respectively.

BASIC FOOD NEEDS. Before the advent of LakeRice collaboration with Kebbi state, 2015-2019 Lagos was importing #350 billion Naira rice anannually. While 6,000 cows are being slaughter daily at over #3 million ie #1,1 trillion Naira annually. Currently, Lagos is into Rice production and expanding boundaries in agropreneurship into SouthWestern region of Nigeria to boost food self sufficiency which currently is about 12% and striving to over 25%( projection before COVID 19) in the coming years. Towards this , Lagos is poised to take massive comparative advantage of her Agrioprenuerial – Production and Processing by the recent launch of
” LAGOS STATE FOOD SECURITY COMPLEX” at Epe. (August ’22). Exploiting it’s comparative advantage in the agricultural production/ processing.
The Coconut initiatives with about 180 km of coconut groves ,Coconut itself has over 300 derivatives (value chains) that needed to be exploited and developed. (Using the Philippines experience where Coconut products can be compared to receipts of petroleum ).
.Also the agricultural program of the state is very much on, AGRICULTURAL YOUTH EMPOWERMENT SCHEME.. Many youths have been trained in Poultry, Fisheries, Vegetables and Livestock. ( thousands of crates of eggs are being harvested daily with Broilers are hatched monthly , Many tonnes of fish are harvested per cycle. ) many Entrepreneurship Centre initiative provides continuous advisory services to farmers such as Commercial Agric. Dev. Project. CAPD. The Ejio Cattle Fattening partnership exsit.
Under the programme many youthful famers are engaged in rice production in Epe under FADAMA project while in Avia Badagry under Agric–YES every year over 100 youth are trained for a period of time about 6months and practice for agreed period ,at the end of which they are assisted with resources and technical support.

POULTRY FARMING.
Lagos State once had the highest density of poultry population in the country ,but was limited by the pressure on land and urbanisation coupled with unrestricted importation of frozen poultry products via the porous borders with neighbouring countries been responsible for the loss of the position. Currently, pockets of commercial poultry farms with various capacity (Poultry Estate Development) abounds in Epe , Ikorodu,Badagary, Eti-Osa , Alimosho and Agege LGA areas of the state. The general objectives is to increase the level of animal protein intake by the citizens of the state , create job opportunities for the unemployed youth , retirees etc thereby reducing the poverty level.
● However, Processing of the produce will enhance and attract premium sales for better earnings.
Currently Lagos is putting in place massive state of art Rice mill with Capacity of about 32MT per hour.which may come up very soon.

LAGOS is BLESSED with SUCCESSION OF VISIONARY, ENERGETIC and COMPETENT leadership. Currently at the helm of affairs as the Governor is the human DYNAMO , Babajide Olusola SANWOOLU. who is blaising the trail of the 30yrs (2022 –2052) MEGA CITY DEVELOPMENT PLAN. To putt in place facilities such as a $2.5bn Badagry Deep Seaport, Lekky Airport , Blue and Red rail line amongst many others.
Lagos desire to showcase promotion of Trade and investment which will make her global gateway and international financial center, Commercial hub and a City of Opportunity. Lagos is One of the ICONIC city of the world. Expanding her MEGA horizon in various corridor and axis of the cosmopolitan drive, The Atlantic city is upcoming so is Lekky Free Trade Zone. amongst many other developmental initiatives. MAGODO new town is coming up on stream. So also is the upscale LEKKY axis.
All my narratives is to highlight the enormoursity of the market potential of Lagos as an emerging MEGA city. And that Lagos offers opportunity to all who have the industry and will to seize it.
The big question, How do you fit into the emerging MEGA city? One cannot afford to be stagnant, otherwise one will be overtaking by the rapid growth and become inconsequential in effect.
At this, the Thinking, Efforts and Vision must change and the time for that is now that recession is winding down . ( although with a growth rate of 1.9% in economy). You need PRODUCT(s) to supply your moneytry needs .

MEGA CITY REQUIREMENTS

The rail transportation of the Blue and Red line systems tranversing the various city’s corridors is ongoing.The Lagos Blue and Red lines are scheduled to commence commercial operations very soon . The combination of both rail lines will reduce the daily commute time of millions of Lagosians from about 2.5 hrs to 30mins, thereby enhancing productivity and improving quality of life.
The Lekki- Badagary multipurpose Deep Seaport ,Free Trade zone and investment hub, sitting on about 90hectares of land , this is expected to create an intermodal means of transportation for businesses and to decongest Apapa and Tincan Island ports over stretch

LEKKI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
In October ’22, The Federal Government officially issued approval by the Aviation Minister to Lagos State Government on the proposed Lekki International Airport. When completed it is expected to cater for air travelling passengers of the 5million inhabitants of Lekki, Ajah and Epe axis of Lagos State. Congrats.

Same goes for electricity, , , properties development etc.
■ Please note that Rapid growth has not been completely for good, however, it appears that a concomitant of industrialization is pollution by exhaust fumes from vehicle , Industries and other environmental nuisance such as flooding due to blocked canals and drainages also noise pollution is accompanied . Crime rate will also be on the the increase by criminal elements.

ECONOMY
