GOOD POLICY
Poultry farmers can get enough returns from investment through well managed chicken value chain and effective poultry management training and capacity building in Feed mill, Chicken processing, Distribution, Hatchery, Logistics and retailing with favourable policies from: Federal, State and Local government authorities.
In Nigeria, Lagos State had the highest density of poultry population in time past but pressure on land as a result of urbanisation riddled her of this position coupled with the unrestricted importation of frozen poultry products via the porous land borders with the neighbouring countries ,however, pockets of commercial poultry farms with various capacity abounds in Epe, Ikorodu, Badagary , Eti Osa, Alimoso and Agege Local Government areas of the state.
NATIONAL POULTRY DEVELOPMENT
The aforementioned shall be discussed under the following headlines:
●Poultry Development
●Strategy For Implementation.
– The programme is designed to establish poultry estates.
– Its nationwide in the 774 LGAs.
– Each poultry house will accommodate 10000 broilers, Cockerell and laying birds.
– Modern automatic cages well fitted rearing penswill be put in place to improve management.
– The government will provide infrastructures and the prospective operators.
– The lease will be for a period of 12 – 18 months.depending on the poultry enterprise renewable annually.
– Operators will be organised into cooperatives societies to take advantage of large production and institutional linkages.
– Each participant will be allotted space for a minimum of 500 birds
– Emphasise will be on Broilers, Cockerell and Layers(egg production ).
– Targeted beneficialries include women, youths and other investors with minimum of qualification of senior secondary school certificate and a fliar for poultry farming.

– Provide the layout and poultry pens.

●Agricultural Insurance Scheme.
—- Introduction
Agricultural Cooperatives face some challenges that are peculiar to Agriculture such as vagaries of weather, disease out brake, flooring etc.that are militating against the production and threatening their existence. As a result of these many of the Agricultural cooperatives have gone moribund hence the need for agricultural Insurance.
• The insurance scheme shall increase investment in agriculture towards ensuring food security and against any uncertainty.
• The scheme shall liaise with viable Insurance companies to underwrite the high risk and uncertainty at minimal rates and rapid response level.
—- Objectives
The primary aim is to provide financial compensation to policy holders to ameliorate the effect of any misfortune , looses or sudden bad occurrences such as diseases outbreak, death, bad bebts, and other hazards like fire, flood, theft etc.
☆ The specific objective include:
• Linkage of Agricultural cooperative societies and farmers to reliable Insurance companies to ensure security of their investment in agriculture.
• Cooperative farmers and other stakeholders in the food chain to insure their interest in order to minimise the effects of hazards of natural disaster/ disease attacks.
• Putting in place insurance scheme that will ensure the safety and guarantee of funds and investment of Cooperative farmers.
• To ensure that clains are paid to beneficiaries promptly in case in case of any eventualities.
—- Funding & Modalities
•The funding will be provided from the pool of accumulated contribution ( premium) of all farmers participating in the scheme.
• Premium shall be be built into the projects and programmes being sponsored partly or wholly by government.
• A percentage of this premium charged by the Insurance Company shall be paid to the Agricultural insurance unit as commission for services rendered between 5 -10%.
—– Role of Agencies
The Insurance unit: would link farmers and governmentproje5 to insurance company in order to facilitate cover and reduce looses by collecting claims.
• The company : Agricultural insurance policy shall be handled by companiesthat have registered with the scheme.
• The company shall provide an insurance cover for all loans , funds, implements , machinery and all agricultural facilities being disbursed by government to farmers.
• The monitoring and evaluating office: shall be responsible for monitoring to ensure that all facilities covered are are in good state ; agreed commission and compensation where eligible are being paid and also ensure that all government Agricultural projects are insured.
—- Operational Modalities
• An INSURANCE CLEARANCE CERTIFICATE (ICC ) duly signed by the director of cooperative services shall be issued by the insurance unit before any loan facility or grant is disbursedto any farmer or Agricultural society.
• A memorandum of understanding ( MOU ) shall be signed between the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperative and the insurance company involved in this scheme.
—– Procedures for Agricultural Insurance.
• The insurance unit shall collate all the required forms that has been filled and submitted by farmers and liaise with the insurance company for adequate insurance cover.
—– Coverage.
● Coverage will cover production, processing, storage and marketing of agricultural products and equipment like:
• Fisheries, fishing nets , artificial ponds.
• piggery , poultry, poultry pens and equipment, other livestocks.
• Arable crops , tree crops etc.

TYPES OF COLD CHAINS
-SHOCK FREEZERS
Shock Freezers are professional equipment that controls temperature necessary for keeping products fresh for a long time.
While preserving the products the equipment makes to keep undamaged nutritional value of the products after being defrosted. The equipment is made to consists of Double Stage Semi Hermatic compressors. The Shock freezers system allows to lower the temperature very rapidly up to -180°C degrees. Freezing is provided by air coolers of it by blowing over fronted surface of the wagon. This enables to freeze down quickly in cold air flow. The room air should not exceed 35°/-40.°C. Besides, it’s proven to be a low-waste and environment friendly system.
COLDSTORAGE
This system is manufactured and installed with the entire components like it is ready to use. It could be of mobile device.
This system can be disassembled so it can be moved to other places.
Cold storage consist of the following levels and types of preserving:
-Cold-rooms 🙁 +16° / +5°C)
-Cold storage Rooms (+5°/-5°C)
-Freezing Rooms : (-18°/-23°C)
-Shock freezer :(-35°/-40°C) .
DEEPFREEZE ROOMS.
These are for preserving products such as meat, poultry etc. For a long time. They are preserved under temperatures not exceeding – 18°/-23°C. In order to isolate these rooms 150mm width sandwich panels are used.
COLD ROOMS
Cold rooms are used to keep baked goods, chocolates etc.
The cold rooms prevent bacteria from growing. Low ventilation allows workers to work without endangering their health which is very important aspect too.
