THE TEXTILE lndustries are in a strait and need serious surgical operation and assistance from the Federal government and stakeholders to bounce back. About 20 years ago we had about 180 factories but currently less than 20 are operating below 23% of installed capacity, the reason is not unconnected with Federal government’s liberalization policy on import into the country that allows anything to come in and compete with local production from Asia.
Before the liberalization, the industry could boast about 500,000 jobs, the textile produces 100% cotton which is affordable for all.
