OPPORTUNITY
The potential of the seafood industry is very humongous in Nigeria but farmers and investors ain’t skilled and well informed of the technology and opportunities . The Asians have identified the potential in Shrimps and prawns industry and are investing massively in it.
Nigeria’s Seafood growers and entrepreneurs can position selves to explore opportunity to benefit from the global export market of $150bn in seafood.

NIGERIA BRACKISH COSTAL WATERS.
Thitherto,The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) claimed that the fishing sector is currently underfunded given rise to illegal fishing activities on the national costal and territorial waters. The inherent nature of ILLEGAL, UNREGULATED & UNREPORTED (IUU) fishing makes it impossible to accurately quantify the full global economic impact of these illegal activities which violate both national and international fishing regulations also with global concern that threatens ocean ecosystems and sustainable fishing loosing diverse coastal species of fish.
Despite having potential to create hundreds of jobs, the Nigeria seafood industry which is estimated at $1bn remains untapped due to inadequate skill coupled with inefficient cold chain infrastructure needed for the preservation of the catch.
The opportunities in shrimps and prawns cultivation are enormous if it can be harnessed. Nigeria’s shrimps and prawns are in great demand and rated as one of the best globally . The area of it’s comparative advantage is Niger Delta , South/South of Nigeria reputed as second largest brackish habitat in the world. Shrimps and prawns is a subsector in the fishing sector have an inshore production capacity of 17,654mt annually (Fed . depth of fisheries.) Nutritionally, Shrimps is rich in OMEGA-3 fatty acids, Iodine and the antioxidant taxanthin with rich source of proteins, minerals and vitamins, excellent for healthy heart and brain.

POOL CONTRIBUTIONS
In Nigeria, the overall GDP contribution from fishing( Small scale and Industrial) was0.84% in 2019 and 1.09% in 2020 from House of Representatives.It was noted that the country looses about #70bn Naira annually to illegal fishing through loss of licence fees and taxation. This had been the case for decades of fish exploitation.
The global value of Shrimps and prawns in subsector of seafood is estimated at $39bn and projected to reach $68bn by 2027.

TECHNOLOGY
To tap into the opportunities , the local artisans need to be trained in the required technology and to assist in preserving their catch and reduce post harvest losses by ensuring adequate cooling facilities. While the Integrated Rural Fisheries Development programme be put in place with provision of mechanised fishing boats, improved handling, storage and processing facilities and transport.

TYPES OF COLD CHAINS

-SHOCK FREEZERS
Shock Freezers are professional equipment that controls temperature necessary for keeping products fresh for a long time.
While preserving the products the equipment makes to keep undamaged nutritional value of the products after being defrosted. The equipment is made to consists of Double Stage Semi Hermatic compressors. The Shock freezers system allows to lower the temperature very rapidly up to -180°C degrees. Freezing is provided by air coolers of it by blowing over fronted surface of the wagon. This enables to freeze down quickly in cold air flow. The room air should not exceed 35°/-40.°C. Besides, it’s proven to be a low-waste and environment friendly system.

COLDSTORAGE
This system is manufactured and installed with the entire components like it is ready to use. It could be of mobile device.
This system can be disassembled so it can be moved to other places.
Cold storage consist of the following levels and types of preserving:
-Cold-rooms 🙁 +16° / +5°C)
-Cold storage Rooms (+5°/-5°C)
-Freezing Rooms : (-18°/-23°C)
-Shock freezer :(-35°/-40°C) .

DEEPFREEZE ROOMS.
These are for preserving products such as meat, poultry etc. For a long time. They are preserved under temperatures not exceeding – 18°/-23°C. In order to isolate these rooms 150mm width sandwich panels are used.

COLD ROOMS
Cold rooms are used to keep baked goods, chocolates etc.
The cold rooms prevent bacteria from growing. Low ventilation allows workers to work without endangering their health which is very important aspect too.
