WHEAT BASED DERIVATIVES TAKEN OVER LOCAL STAPLE FOODS IN NIGERIA.
In Nigeria, about 5.9mmt of wheat is imported annually. While the wheat growing states of kano, Jigawa, Bauchi , Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Taraba and Gombe are responsible for only about 400,000mt before the Insurgency limited the farming activities. Insecurity had affected most farming communities in the entire nation causing the staple Foods such as Cassava, Cereals, sweet potatoes, rice, Maize etc to be out of reach of many families. The senerio had increased dependence on wheat importation.
Most urban inhabitants now depend on various wheat based derivatives for daily living. There is surge in demand of Bread, Semolina, Pasta and noodles. The prices of wheat based Food are also surging but not as fast to it’s close substitute in local staple Foods . It’s also readily available.
As at July ’21 a bag of wheat flour was 15,500 Naira as against 12,800 Naira in January ’21. While the foreign exchange sourcing has been dynamic. Currently N510 to $1. From N 365 to $1 in 2020.
Wheat production in Nigeria has remained relatively low due to lack of modern Agronomic Practices, unavailability of improved seedlings , lack of Mechanisation , coupled with the ever increasing population of over 211million and high rate of insecurity across major wheat growing states.

PANACEA FOR INADEQUACIES IN WHEAT PRODUCTION.
Nigeria is one of the least mechanised farming nation in the world with the country’s tractor density estimated at 0.27hp/hectare far below FAO recommended tractor density of 1.5 hp /hectare. Nigeria is ranked 132nd out of 188 countries worldwide ( FAO /UN in tractors ) Nigeria needs $3 trillion to bridge the huge infrastructural gap (Global Rating Agency Moody Inv. services ).
— Introduction of high yielding wheat varieties.
— Training on new trend in wheat farming mastering advanced storage and agronomy techniques.
— Skills and knowledge to mitigate impart of harsh weather conditions, Arid land which undermines wheat cultivation effort in the country.
— Address massive postharvest losses occasioned by crude farming Practices.
— Supply quality input and raising their level of Research through Lake Chad Research Institute Coupled with Infrastructural facilities on farmland.
