….@ WUFAS AGRONet,We don’t know more than Food.
( We earned “FAO” Top Fan barge ).

Cereals belong to the family of grasses called GRAMINACEAE. A major source of carbohydrate the types of cereals we have are : Maize, Millet, Barley, Soghium, Wheat, Rice etc.
Wheat is grown mostly in Canada, Russia and other temperate regions of the world. Wheat needs about 13 – 14 inches of rainfall per annum for its normal growth. Wheat contains Alutin , Gluten and other protein materials that gives bread it’s spongy structures when pounded giving horny comb structures also before it’s baked.

NUTRIENT COMPOSITION OF WHEAT

Moisture 13.4%, Protein 12.1%, Fat 1.9%, CHO 69%, Ash 7%.

There are 3 varieties of Wheat.

  • Bread wheat which has two varieties: The Hard winter wheat and the Soft winter wheat .
The hard winter wheat contains between 11 – 14% of protein while the soft winter wheat contains between 10 – 13% of protein.
  • The second variety of wheat is the pasty wheat. There are 2 types: Hard spring wheat 12 – 14% protein , soft winter wheat 8 -10% of protein.
  • Macaroni wheat ( Durum wheat) 11- 14% protein.

WHEAT USES

  1. Wheat can be milled into wheat flour for the manufacture of Biscuits, Bread, Cakes etc.
  2. Semolina ( Semovita ).
  3. Macaroni for pastas. wheaterbix.

WHEAT BASED DERIVATIVES TAKEN OVER LOCAL STAPLE FOODS IN NIGERIA

In Nigeria, about 4.9mmt of wheat is imported annually. While the wheat growing states of kano, Jigawa, Bauchi , Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Taraba and Gombe are responsible for only about 400,000mt before the Insurgency limited the farming activities. Insecurity had affected most farming communities in the entire nation causing the staple Foods such as Cassava, Cereals, sweet potatoes, rice, Maize etc to be out of reach of many families. The senerio had increased dependence on wheat importation.

Most urban inhabitants now depend on various wheat based derivatives for daily living. There is surge in demand of Bread, Semolina, Pasta and noodles. The prices of wheat based Food are also surging but not as fast to it’s close substitute in local staple Foods . It’s also readily available. The import dependence on wheat is currently being hampered by the Russian and Ukraine war. Causing scarcity.

As at July ’22 in Nigeria a bag of wheat flour 50kg sells for 28500 Naira as against 5000 Naira in January ’20. While the foreign exchange sourcing has been dynamic. Currently N618 to $1. From N 365 to $1 in 2020.

Wheat production in Nigeria has remained relatively low due to lack of modern Agronomic Practices, unavailability of improved seedlings , lack of Mechanisation , coupled with the ever increasing population of over 211million and high rate of insecurity across major wheat growing states.

Panacea for inadequacies in wheat production

Nigeria is one of the least mechanised farming nation in the world with the country’s tractor density estimated at 0.27hp/hectare far below FAO recommended tractor density of 1.5 hp /hectare. Nigeria is ranked 132nd out of 188 countries worldwide ( FAO /UN in tractors ) Nigeria needs $3 trillion to bridge the huge infrastructural gap (Global Rating Agency Moody Inv. services ).

  1. The introduction of high-yielding wheat varieties.
  2. Training on the new trend in wheat farming, mastering advanced storage and agronomy techniques.
  3. Skills and knowledge to mitigate the effects of harsh weather conditions and arid land which undermine wheat cultivation efforts in the country.
  4. Addressing massive postharvest losses occasioned by crude farming practices
  5. They supply quality inputs and raise their level of research through the Lake Chad Research Institute, coupled with infrastructural facilities on farmland.
  6. Heat resistant varieties are capable of increasing production per hectare of a minimum of four tones per hectare.

TYPES OF COLD CHAINS

-SHOCK FREEZERS
Shock Freezers are professional equipment that controls temperature necessary for keeping products fresh for a long time.
While preserving the products the equipment makes to keep undamaged nutritional value of the products after being defrosted. The equipment is made to consists of Double Stage Semi Hermatic compressors. The Shock freezers system allows to lower the temperature very rapidly up to -180°C degrees. Freezing is provided by air coolers of it by blowing over fronted surface of the wagon. This enables to freeze down quickly in cold air flow. The room air should not exceed 35°/-40.°C. Besides, it’s proven to be a low-waste and environment friendly system.

COLDSTORAGE
This system is manufactured and installed with the entire components like it is ready to use. It could be of mobile device.
This system can be disassembled so it can be moved to other places.
Cold storage consist of the following levels and types of preserving:
-Cold-rooms 🙁 +16° / +5°C)
-Cold storage Rooms (+5°/-5°C)
-Freezing Rooms : (-18°/-23°C)
-Shock freezer :(-35°/-40°C) .

DEEPFREEZE ROOMS.
These are for preserving products such as meat, poultry etc. For a long time. They are preserved under temperatures not exceeding – 18°/-23°C. In order to isolate these rooms 150mm width sandwich panels are used.

COLD ROOMS
Cold rooms are used to keep baked goods, chocolates etc.
The cold rooms prevent bacteria from growing. Low ventilation allows workers to work without endangering their health which is very important aspect too.
