As the new planting season approaches WUFAS AGR0Net provides lucid outlook for crops of comparable advantages in various ecological zones of Nigeria.
The followings are the various Ecological zones in Nigeria with probable crops production.
- SAHEL SAVANNA, – SUDAN SAVANNA, -GUINEA SAVANNA, – MOUNTAIN GRASSLAND, – RAIN FOREST, – FRESH WATER SWAMP, -MANGROVE SWAMP FOREST.
SAHEL SAVANNA – Lake Chad region /basins. with Low grass , thorny shrubs and bushes .
The soil types are slightly alkaline and moderately saline. Across the region.
AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION – Fishing with Pasture grass for livestock.
SUDAN SAVANNA – Grassland with scattered trees.
Soil type – Slightly saline with mordrate alkalinity in various locations.
STATE CONSTITUENTS :
Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Bauchi, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Yobe, Borno, Gombe, (Upper Adamawa and Niger).
CROPS PRODUCTION
Tobacco, Cereals, Legumes, HORTICULTURAL (Fruits and vegetables ) ,Cowpeas, Soghium,Millet, Sesame, Gum Arabic, Maize, Cotton, Groundnut, Rice, Wheat, Cassava, Tomatoes ,Carrots , etc.
GUINEA SAVANNA – Woodland with long grass. – mostly slightly saline.
STATES CONSTITUENT.:
KADUNA, FCT, Nasarawa, Taraba, Kogi, Benue, Upper Kwara /Oyo and lower Adamawa.
CROPS :Cereals, Legumes, Sugar cane, Tubers, Fruits and vegetables, Sheabutter, Cashew, Cassava, Yam, Soya beans, Groundnut, ( Ginger is widely grown in Southern Kaduna , it’s an export crop to Asia and Europe. )
MOUNTAIN GRASSLAND is found at the tail end of Northeast of Nigeria.
This is a picturesque and mountainous area transverse by major river valleys of Gongola, Donga, Taraba and Benue. are all sourced from the eastern mountain ranges of the Adamawa and Mambila plateau. Prominent topographical land forms are the kamale peak, the three sister rocks in Song, Mandara, Alantika mountains the Hong hills and Mambila plateau.
STATE CONSTITUENTS : – TARABA
CROPS : Cereals,Sesame, Rice, Legumes, Cassava, Coffee, Tea, Cotton, Sugar cane, Fruits and vegetables etc. Livestock and Fisheries.
RAIN FOREST
STATES CONSTITUENTS :
Kwara, Oyo,Ekiti, Ondo, Ogun ,Anambra, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu ,Cross River, lower Kwara and upper Delta.
Forestry with wide life preservation. Livestock, Fishing and Poultry.
CROPS :
COCOA, Kolanut, Tree crops , Tubers, Cashew, Oil palm, Rice (upland and swamp) with swamp rice produces double the Yeild of former. (Abakaliki rice. )
Essential oils – Sunflower, Castor beans and Mellon .
FRESH WATER SWAMP FOREST.
Transversing through Lagos, Edo,: Delta.Others, Rivers and Akwa Ibom.
CROPS PRODUCTION.
Lagos has a comparative advantage over Coconut, it has about 180km of Coconut groves. While Coco yam, Fruits and vegetables abound. Poultry and Fisheries are in abundance in the state.
Edo and Delta , Akwa Ibom are good in Rubber, Oil palm plantations and Forestry (Timber). Tubers (Yam).
MANGROVE SWAMP FOREST
STATE CONSTITUENTS :
Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers.
CROPS : HORTICULTURAL CROPS eg . Fruits and vegetables. Food crops eg. Cassava, Coco yam, Banana, Maize, Coconut, Rubber Oil palm etc.

TYPES OF COLD CHAINS
-SHOCK FREEZERS
Shock Freezers are professional equipment that controls temperature necessary for keeping products fresh for a long time.
While preserving the products the equipment makes to keep undamaged nutritional value of the products after being defrosted. The equipment is made to consists of Double Stage Semi Hermatic compressors. The Shock freezers system allows to lower the temperature very rapidly up to -180°C degrees. Freezing is provided by air coolers of it by blowing over fronted surface of the wagon. This enables to freeze down quickly in cold air flow. The room air should not exceed 35°/-40.°C. Besides, it’s proven to be a low-waste and environment friendly system.
COLDSTORAGE
This system is manufactured and installed with the entire components like it is ready to use. It could be of mobile device.
This system can be disassembled so it can be moved to other places.
Cold storage consist of the following levels and types of preserving:
-Cold-rooms 🙁 +16° / +5°C)
-Cold storage Rooms (+5°/-5°C)
-Freezing Rooms : (-18°/-23°C)
-Shock freezer :(-35°/-40°C) .
DEEPFREEZE ROOMS.
These are for preserving products such as meat, poultry etc. For a long time. They are preserved under temperatures not exceeding – 18°/-23°C. In order to isolate these rooms 150mm width sandwich panels are used.
COLD ROOMS
Cold rooms are used to keep baked goods, chocolates etc.
The cold rooms prevent bacteria from growing. Low ventilation allows workers to work without endangering their health which is very important aspect too.
