THE ROLE OF RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT / TRAINING IN INDUSTRIAL GROWTH AND SUSTAINABLE FOOD SECURITY IN NIGERIA
■ SDG: Fintech’s role in creating enabling environment for reaching potential.
■ About 90% of Technologies powering the economy are imported — NOTAP.
……@Wufas Agronet, we don’t know more than Food.
( We earned “FAO” Top Fan barge )
INTELLECTUAL WHEREWITHAL
Creation had before time put in place all that is needed to make mankind SUPER all needed is to dig deep into existence and use the already known to seek the unknown. This is what the SUPER POWERS of this world did to lord it over the rest of the world.
Humans are the center of inspiration for creative and critical thinking.
The springboard of development of mankind is in science and Technology premised on Research and Development/ Training the innovations and inventions thereof will fast track industrial growth and development. Science and Technology hold the key to the social-economic transformation of nations.
While RnD is Capital intensive, the resultant innovations and inventions are more lucrative.
In Africa, there is a clearly identified skill gap in the current 4th realm of global economic order rather than the archaic methodology of ANALOGUES of business.
The UN scribe said the country’s population of over 150mllion (Nigeria is about 211m) has the majority living on less than 370 nairas per day quoting from World bank data. He said, although the task of lifting people above poverty is not easy, the government must act within the short and medium terms to ensure that vulnerable Nigerians are protected in an effective and innovative way including Fintech transfer programs and another social protection scheme
.
It was predicted that there will be about an 800million young people by 2050, the challenge lies in creating an enabling environment for them to reach their potential and become a blessing rather than a curse to the continent.
There is a clearly identifiable skill gap in Blockchain, Cyber Security, Programming, Big Data, Artificial intelligence, Deep learning, and Soft skills depending on the fast and continuous evolution of technologies. Accessing the right candidate and talent rightly.
BIG DATA –Fintech.
Take Big Data, for instance, it has high volume, velocity, and variety. It comes as
Structure and Unstructured data, Structure data has numbers, names, addresses, ages, and dates. Unstructured data is difficult to process .it has videos, images, and audio. The Structure data can be analyzed program easily. the Unstructured data cannot be processed easily it requires special technology. Big Data can detect fraud can be analyzed to construct habits, explain behaviors, and play a crucial role in the evolution of Fintech The skill (Big Data) is in high demand experts here are billionaires hobnobbing and dining with the ‘Fat Boys’ of the Forbes status. This has a very deep skill gap to be filled.
New training programs are needed and required with the ever-changing nature of the Fintech industry Which is crucial in retaining talent within any organization. Available training scheme would allow new recruits and experienced staff to build diverse skills. New training programs are required with the ever-changing nature of the Fintech industry To support Upskilling, and advance products and services to close the gap of talent shortage.
Beijing uses top Universities/Research institutes to train the Fintech workforce.
Nigeria needs to replicate this in our various R&D institutions.
The same goes for Artificial Intelligence (Robotics), Mechatronics (EV), etc.
R&D IN OTHER CLIMES
● California, a state in the USA is the 6th largest economy in the world, larger than what obtains in France and Brazil. With little offshore oil, the economy is built around STANFORD University – supplying SILICON VALLEY with innovations and inventions from Research to bodies such as Apple, Hewlett Packard, eBay, Facebook, Oracle, and lately Tesla(mechatronics- electric cars) all developing cutting-edge technological products, the list is inexhaustible.
● Singapore, within a span of 30 years under ‘Lee Kuan Yew’ a lowly 3rd world nation was transformed into a competitive economic status. Majoring in Manufacturing, Finance, and Shipbuilding amongst others.
● Israel with a population of about 8 million a desert country of 22,400sqkm landmass ( Just about the size of Jigawa state in Nig. 23154sqm ) hosts millions of pilgrims yearly without importing food. Also are leaders in cutting-edge technological innovations in Armaments, Health, Agriculture, ICT, etc.
● Incredible India is a global hub in ICT, Agriculture, Machinery & Equipment Manufacturing, Health, etc.
● The astronomical rise of China from the world capital of poverty to the global most competitive economic status is not without R&D/Innovation.
● Netherland’s uncommon stride in Agriculture and others is evidence of investment in R&D/ Innovation.
— All the uncommon developmental strides as discussed above and lots more are not unconnected with investment in Research & Development / Innovation.
■ Nigeria had changed her Ministry of Science and Technology to the Ministry of Science and Innovation. — Currently (2022) about 90% of the Productive powering technologies are imported.- National Office of Technology Aquisation Promotion (NOTAP). The world is waiting. Nigeria is the global largest producer of yam tubers 61.7% but with cutlass and hoe. (Most of the cutlasses are imported).
Basically, Nigeria is an agrarian economy until oil discovery lately, blessed with optimum climate and weather conditions that encourages Large scale farming in livestock, fisheries, forestry and food crops farming. Blessed also with Agroprenuerail activities with immense potential in Science and Technology application to food processing preservation, packaging and storage with great potentials for investors to convert surplus in time of glut into valuable products in scarcity.
IMPORTANCE OF R&D/TRAINING IN NIGERIA
In Nigeria, there are over 150 Research institutions which constitute the National Research and Innovation Council NRIC) – very high economic portal for growth and development but all are poorly funded due to lack of extant law to uphold the establishment. It’s high time the law be assented to without further delay. Just like the National Science and Technology decree nos. 20 of 1987.
In Africa, most Technologies depended on, are Obsolete and archaic, because Research and Development was backbenched rather than being the front runner. resulting in underdevelopment.. It is of interest to note that the world is in the 4th realm of economic order while Africa is still grappling with the old order of doing business- analogue, new technologies are opening up sequencetailly into ages of digital, mechatronics, Robotics, Artificial intelligence, Internet of things (IoTs), Big Data, Mobile Development, SEO/ SEM Marketing, UI./UX Design, Cloud computing/AWS, Block chain, Cyber security, Augmented technologies,Machine learning technology and many more.
Nigeria is not bereft of world class researchers but most of them are being hijacked by the innovation hungry and more serious developed nations exploiting their smartness with enticing budget /grant almost equaling some state’s budget in Nigeria such as Philip Emeguali of super computer and recently Dr. Ene from Enugu state who won an award on Brain Tumor all in far away USA.
INDIGENOUS RESERCH AND DEVELOPMENT.
Researchers in Nigeria have developed quite a number of machineries in various Unit Operations in food processing. Such as Garri processing machine , Distillery columns for local ethanol production. Vat Mixer etc. Kudus to bodies such as FIIRO, NIFOR (oil palm ) but the patenting rate are rather low. More aggressive entrepreneurs could be attracted through enticement from financial bodies such as banks coming up with favourable loaning conditions especially single digit interest rate amongst others.
Most locally fabricated equipment are lacking in Precision engineering dimensions and automation such as velocity, acceleration, speed, time etc. this affects the efficiency and predictability of Process programing operations. as compared with those imported from Asia countries of China, S Korea, Indonesia etc. With more accurate capabilities
FOOD PROCESSING
Processing of local food crops must embrace the international best practices and operations. Our Garri for instance must exhibit Standard Operational Procedures (SOP) conforming to Quality Control eg – Average particle size, – Acidity (variant), – extraneous matter eg (sand) removal, -Packaging, Expiration date etc .same for others.
Fermentation products eg, Locust beans-( Iru or Dawadawa) the protein fermentation must be controlled rather than the wild fermentation we have now. The Q/C must ascertain – Desired putrefaction levels of Low, Mild and High(ogiri). The resultant products can be stocked cubed like Maggi for sauce and stews.
Towards achieving all these, INCUBATION TECHNOLOGICAL PROJECT centres be established in every Local government areas that have comparative advantage of a particular food crops .
TRAINING, TRAINING, TRAINING.
With the attendant high Universities and other tertiary institutions of well over 200 to a population of about 211million, with about 67% in extreme poverty.
Nigeria has relatively huge numbers of academics and scientists mostly theoreticians with unequaled fluency in English language but are unemployable with no appreciable industrial experience. Only very few, less than 7% are practically oriented as engineers or Technologists that has various knowledge of Food Biochemistry, Microbiology, engineering Q/C etc that can convert raw food crops materials into manufactured products.
At WUFAS AGR0NET we are vetarians in Food Processing Technology our aim is to inculcate the ETHICS of Food Processing a REDIFINED AGROPRENURIAL PROCESSING into the teeming youthful population, startups and other entrepreneurs our course outline include and not limited to water treatment, food management system, programme model, preservation, packaging, carbonation etc. We also Demonstrate practically various classes of food ie: *Dairy – drinking, Greek, fruits, frozen yoghurt. Sour cream, Chesse, Butter.
*Beverage- Alcoholic and non- alcoholic, Wine, Bitters, Herbal extraction and many more.
- Baking – Bread, pastries etc
- Milling- Rice ,Cassava etc.
- Drying Technology.
- Canning – fruits etc.
The above requires education and practical exposition to break the traditional superstition arising from ignorance and acculturation to ETHICS of food processing Technology.
We also , attune the trainees (in relation to food processing) to various Unit Operations : Heat transffer (effect on food processing), Drying, Extraction, Centrifugation, Filtration, Mixing, Pasteurization , Cooling etc.
CONCLUSION
Indigenous standardization of Nigeria Food products must be stepped up through aculturization in Ethics of food processing Technology
Nigeria Research and Innovation Council 2018 Bill be assented to forthwith for rapid industrial growth and development.
To further encourage Reserch, Tax Relief for corporate bodies and individuals sponsoring such. This Central Bank initiative must hold. ( a tax- deductible allowance equal to 120% of expended amount)
Innovation and Inventions should be patented in accordance with International acceptable industrial property laws.
Incubation Technology projects centre must be established in rural areas of each Local Government with comparative advantage of any food crop.
Federal, State and local government should build less of retail outlets and more of Small scale processing centers.
A DO NOTHING APPROACH TO RnD/ TRAINING, BUT IMPORTING INNOVATIONS AND INVENTIONS IS INIMICAL TO INDUSTRIAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF ANY NATION –
GOD BLESS Nigeria.

TYPES OF COLD CHAINS
-SHOCK FREEZERS
Shock Freezers are professional equipment that controls temperature necessary for keeping products fresh for a long time.
While preserving the products the equipment makes to keep undamaged nutritional value of the products after being defrosted. The equipment is made to consists of Double Stage Semi Hermatic compressors. The Shock freezers system allows to lower the temperature very rapidly up to -180°C degrees. Freezing is provided by air coolers of it by blowing over fronted surface of the wagon. This enables to freeze down quickly in cold air flow. The room air should not exceed 35°/-40.°C. Besides, it’s proven to be a low-waste and environment friendly system.
COLDSTORAGE
This system is manufactured and installed with the entire components like it is ready to use. It could be of mobile device.
This system can be disassembled so it can be moved to other places.
Cold storage consist of the following levels and types of preserving:
-Cold-rooms 🙁 +16° / +5°C)
-Cold storage Rooms (+5°/-5°C)
-Freezing Rooms : (-18°/-23°C)
-Shock freezer :(-35°/-40°C) .
DEEPFREEZE ROOMS.
These are for preserving products such as meat, poultry etc. For a long time. They are preserved under temperatures not exceeding – 18°/-23°C. In order to isolate these rooms 150mm width sandwich panels are used.
COLD ROOMS
Cold rooms are used to keep baked goods, chocolates etc.
The cold rooms prevent bacteria from growing. Low ventilation allows workers to work without endangering their health which is very important aspect too.
